Ever wondered how to make campfire bread on a stick? Whether you’re having a bonfire party in the garden (or cooking on the BBQ thanks to an autumnal power cut) our recipe is a sure fire winner anytime there’s a fire alight. It’s incredibly easy to make, and, if you are camping, you can mix the dry ingredients in a ziplock bag and store somewhere dry until you’re ready to make it. And if you are feeling creative, why not try making one of our campfire popcorn poppers?
Ingredients (makes 8)
500g self-raising flour
75g caster sugar
1 tablespoon milk powder
200ml water
A lump of butter if you have some
8 sticks, about a metre long. If you are in the garden, bamboo canes work well, but if you can find them, hazel and willow sticks are great, as you can strip the bark off to give a nice clean surface.
- When you feel like making it, simply add cold water a little at a time until the mixture forms a stiff dough and knead well for a few minutes until it is springy and smooth. Divide into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a sausage and pinch one end onto the top of stick; continue wrapping in a downwards spiral, pinching the dough back onto itself at the other end to finish it off.
- Hold your stick over the embers (but not in the flames!), and keep turning so it cooks evenly and is golden all over (about 10 minutes). It should sound hollow when tapped if it is properly cooked. Slide off the stick, and fill the hole with butter, golden syrup, jam or, my favourite, Marmite! You can even mix fruit and nuts, grated cheese or even a little bit of sage and onion stuffing in with the dry mixture to add variety (omit the sugar in the dough if you are going for a savoury flavour).
- (NB the top example in the photograph was made by a fiercely independent five year old, hence the creative shape 🙂
